Polynesian koifish tattoodesign by Storm3d

Written by M. Storm

I started on a new design last week, a tribal koifish tattoo mixed with Polynesian/Maoristyle koru shapes.

Here are some pictures to show you the design process. The first photo shows the sketch I did with a pen, just a rough design to see how I could make the koifish and koru patterns flow together:

koifish sketch with maori koru shapes

Below you see the original pencil sketch I designed. The koru shapes are nicely flowing with the koi fish and other surrounding tribal patterns.

Once I finished the pencil drawing of the japanese koifish, the design was traced with black markers.

I recorded the full proces of tracing, shading and coloring and made a Youtube video, so you can see how it was done:

Finally I did some digital mockups, so you can see how the tattoo looks on different bodyparts:

Drawing a halfsleeve Samoan tattoo design

Written by M. Storm

Hello,

I'm back again, with another half sleeve tattoo design in Samoan inspired style.
On Facebook I've had a lot of compliments and comments on my previous design, so I decided to create a series of these drawings in the same style.

Well here's a picture of the first basic lines I drew:

How to draw Samoan tattoo patterns
Pencil sketch of a Samoan tribal sleeve tattoo

I start with a circular shape at the top that follows the upper part of the shoulder and then drew a few tapering lines to add some motion. The spearheads are a common pattern in the Samoan style, symbolizing strength and power. There are many kinds of spear- or arrowheads, so I usually combine different ones in one design to keep it as intricate as possible.

Mostly I try to draw a few layers on top of eachother, running above- or through other patterns.
This gives a sense of depth and it makes the design flow.

Here's a second sketch, you can see I traced parts of the drawing with a black marker and fineliner:

Normally I first draw the full design with a pencil and then start tracing it, but sometimes I get a little impatient and cannot wait to see how it turns out :)

This photo shows the upper part almost traced and finished:

After a lot of sketching, erasing, and redoing the lines, I finally finished this flash design and took some photos with my Canon EOS 400D:

Another picture shows a digital mock-up of a shoulder with the sleeve projected on it. It's not a 100% accurate, but gives you an idea on how it will look once it's tattooed:

I made a Youtube video of the total design process, so you can see a kind of time-lapse on how the design evolves. Please subscribe to my channel if you want to see my latest videos:

Shoulder tattoo design in Maori style

Written by M. Storm

Hi,

Recently I created two new tattoo designs for my webshop. The first tattoo is a Kirituhi Maori style shoulder design. All my tattoos are hand-drawn on A3 paper with a B2 pencil. First I sketch the basic shape of the shoulder and upper arm and then add some koru (fern) curves that flow nicely through the design. Once I'm satisfied with the overall look, I start filling in the patterns between the korus with triangles, lines, spearheads and other repetitive shapes. Below are a few pictures of the tattoo design in progress

For my Youtube channel I created a special video, so you can see the total design from start to finish:

The final high resolution is available on my website, but can also be purchased here on my blog. Once I receive your payment, you will get 2 high quality .jpg files. The first one is the full design including gradients, the second is the linedrawing or stencil for your tattoo artist, so he can easily transfer the outlines of the design to your skin with thermal paper.

Samoan inspired shoulder tattoo design

Written by Mark Storm

Hi,

I get a lot of request from people that are looking for a Samoan-inspired design, similar to the Sonny Bill Williams tattoo sleeve.
So I decided to design a set of intricate shoulder tatoo pieces with a lot of small details in a graphic style.
You can find all 3 designs in this set here.

The original design of SBW looks like this:

First I made a basic pencil sketch with a height of 30 cm (12 inches) and added some detailed Samoan inspired patterns. Then a few swirls of Maori koru and traced the lines with a marker:

The final design has a nice upper part, I added some other shapes on top to make it look more complex. You can order the high resolution image of this design, by simply clicking the "buy now" below. You get the high quality files sent by e-mail once I receive your payment.

New maori tattoo gallery optimized for Ipad and Iphone

Written by Mark Storm

Hi,

I recently bought an Apple Ipad2 and use it mainly for shooting pictures and recording movies of the design process. I can easily add these photos to my twitter messages (@storm3d) and upload the movies to Youtube.com in a few clicks. It's also very usefull for quickly browsing the web...

There's only one big downside to Apple products, and that's the fact that Apple doesn't support the Adobe Flash plugin. For my website galleries, I use(d) the "simpleviewer" plugin, that creates a really nice and simple Flash gallery with a thumbnail and a larger image next or above it.

Now I use my Ipad, I see that a lot of mobile visitors cannot see the designs in my gallery, so I had to make changes to it.

My website design is based on the principles of the "Save the Pixel" e-book by Ben Hunt, which states that the design should be as simple as possible and every pixel should contribute to the main goal of the website.

Keeping this in mind, I redesigned the tattoo galleries. Here's a picture of the 'before' gallery:

flash gallery with maori tattoos for sale designer artistThe red marked area is the flash movie containing the maori tattoo gallery.

People could scroll through the images and see the number and price of the design.

Before ordering it, customers had to select the correct tattoo nr. from the dropdown list and hit the "Buy Now" button.

People often selected the wrong tattoo and bought the piece they didn't want.

To get rid of this problem I decided to implement the Lightbox plugin/script to my gallery instead of the simpleviewer movie.
One other advantage was that I could add the size and price of the design in the header/description and even add a Paypal button, so it became impossible to order the wrong tatoo design.

The new gallery is now looking like this, with the lightbox frame popping up:

So if you have an Ipad, Ipod or Iphone, please check it out and let me know if there's anything I can change to improve it.

Lower back tattoo in maori style

Written by Mark Storm

Hi!

I know it has been too long since my last post, but here are a few new sketches I have done for some customers. First a lower back tattoo for a British customer, who wanted a simple symmetrical design with some nice flowing lines, representing the waves and sea:

lower back maori tattoo sketch picturepencil sketch of a maori inspired back tatoo designThis first design was a bit too wide, so I had to narrow it a little.

In the upper part of the tattoo I created some stylized wave shapes.

The final tattoo looks like this:

Samoan inspired tattoo sleeve

Written by Mark Storm

Hi,

Here's another project, a Samoan inspired design for the upper arm and shoulder.
One of my customers wanted a Samoan-style tattoo, so only the fills and lines and no further meanings in it. He wanted it to be very detailed and symmetrical.

My progressing sketches looked like this:

And finally the end result:

Ps. I'm working on an update of my website galleries, to add the latest designs to the galleries. There will be around 7 new tattoos available, one in a mixed maori/samoan style and 5 or 6 in a Maori inspired style with some nice realistic detailed feathers.

I'll let you know when it's ready and where you can find these images.

tribal tattoo design for the lower leg

Written by Mark Storm

Hi,

This week I slowly started on a new tattoo project, a tribal tattoo for the lower leg, wrapping around the leg from shin to calf. The tattoo design is symmetrical with koru curves and some nice repetitive patterns derived from polynesian and other tribal art.

I really enjoyed drawing this piece for a customer from Switzerland. The sketches are really flowing and have some rythm that I love to draw.

Maori forearm tattoo design

Written by Mark Storm

Hi!

Yesterday I published the first tattoo design of my new collection in Maori/Kirituhi style.
I created a total of 4 new forearm tattoos, which can be purchased here.

This one is also a symmetrical design for the lower arm with some leave/fern shapes in it. I really enjoy drawing this kind of sketches and images, the symmetry gives a clean and sharp look.

The original size is around 24 x 14 cm (9,5 x 5,5 inches), but it's a high resolution design, so you can scale it to adjust it to arm.
Price for this design is 29,75 euro / 40 US dollars.

As soon as I receive your payment, you'll receive an e-mail with the high resolution design (.jpg file) and a sheet/ linedrawing for your tattoo artist.

high resolution polynesian tribal tattoo designs

Written by Mark Storm

Hi There,

I finished a few designs that I showed you last week. The first one is the polynesian mask design. A symmetrical piece with a nice face and lizard in the design. Here's the high resolution image:

The second design is a really large shoulder and chest tattoo, it has many styles in it, some Kirituhi, polynesian and some "storm3d" fantasy.
I took me quite some work to get this one uptimized. It was originally drawn on 2 pieces of A3 size paper (200g/m2).
I scan it on an A4 scanner, so I had to glue 4 pieces together into one and line it up perfectly.

Here's the high res design:
